Light, movement and drama are enduring characteristics of Peter Roche's artworks from the 1980s to the present. Having first come to attention in the late 1970s as a performance artist, his later objects and exhibitions embody a performative aspect, an element of theatre creating an immersive environment for the viewer. Fluorescent lights, neon and LEDs frequently combine with mechanical, electrical or electronic components to create kinetic artworks that move, rest, and react to predetermined triggers.
While many works suggest nascent science fictional or dystopian narratives, the issues raised are highly topical and canvas broad-ranging ideas around the role of the state, propaganda, public/private boundaries, and very current concerns about surveillance of citizens. Oppositional notions as pleasure and pain, darkness and light, calm and agitation are also ever-present.
Roche, who has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Auckland, has been exhibiting since 1979. Having exhibited widely throughout the 1980s and 1990s - with major exhibitions at Auckland Art Gallery, City Gallery Wellington, Govett Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth and internationally in the 1st Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane and the 1st Korean Bienniale of Contemporary Art - Roche has re-emerged in the past few years with significant new bodies of work. In 2011 a major large-scale neon light work Saddleblaze was installed at the international sculpture park the Gibbs Farm on the Kaipara Harbour. His work is held in many public and private collections including Te Papa Tongarewa - the Museum of New Zealand, the Auckland Art Gallery, the Chartwell, Govett Brewster and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery amongst others.
