For this exhibition, Cat has created seven new wall-hung leather sculptures -- shrouds that speak to that which is obscured. On one level, they are simple explorations of form - sketch-like referencing classical sculpture, anatomy and life drawing. They also suggest diverse narratives around memory and grief, transience and mortality and the role of sculptural monuments.
From the Renaissance to the 21st century, worm-ridden to diamond-encrusted, skulls have featured in western art. Here Cat brings her distinctive take on the tradition allowing her chosen medium to drape and mould -- almost theatrically but ultimately simply, quietly, richly suggestive.
The sense of memento mori in these works connects conceptually directly with two other projects in which Cat is engaged. At the end the month she opens a new exhibition -- The Horses Stayed Behind -- of work produced during her Tylee Cottage Artist Residency at the Sarjeant Gallery in Wanganui. The centrepiece is a large wall work of 500 Victorian hair-wreathes. Made of horsehair, the work records the New Zealand horses that went to World War 1 and never returned. In August, she represents New Zealand in the TRIO Sculpture Biennale in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where she her work will explore contemporary sculpture's engagement with public monument.
After Brazil, Cat will spend a year completing a Master of Fine Arts at Northumbria University in Newcastle.
Cat Auburn has exhibited regularly since graduating in 2008 with a Post Graduate Diploma in Fine Arts (Distinction) from the Elam School of Fine Arts. While at university, she received the Joseph Raynes Scholarship for Fine Arts and the Auckland University Bursary Award. In 2008, she was a finalist in the Wallace Art Award and in 2010 won the Olivia Spencer Bower Foundation Art Award and a year-long residency in Christchurch. She also won the People's Choice Award in the COCA Anthony Harper Art Award. In 2012 Cat had a solo exhibition at the Dowse Art Museum and in 2013 she held her first solo exhibition with Bartley Company Art and collaborated with Fiona Pardington to create a series of works for the Courtenay Place light box public art project.
