contemporary cameraless photography
18 may - 11 june 2016
Danica Chappell blends history, genre and technology to create distinctive, densely layered tintypes that layer modernist geometric forms with 19th century photography. Working in the expanded field of photography and the larger context of a huge revival of interest in cameraless photography, Chappell challenges conventions of how photography is usually seen and presented, with work that is multilayered - both within the picture plane and in the assemblage of the finished work which may include up to four plates in one piece.
Her work has been described as "gorgeously sharp collage abstractions that beguile with their textures, colours and reflections of light". (critic Mark Amery)
Melbourne based, Chappell has a Masters of Fine Art from the Victorian College of the Arts. In 2107, she received an Honourable Mention in the 2017 Bowness Prize, "Australia's most coveted photography prize". Her work has been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally.
From October 2018 to March 2019, she will have a solo exhibition at the Heide Museum of Modern Art.
